Dr. Ahmed is presently Director of the Institute of Historical and Social Research, Karachi, and Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Sohail University, Karachi. He is also associated with leading academic institutions as visiting faculty, including the Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, where he teaches in the Department of Social Sciences with a specialization in Social and Political Sciences. He is a former Director of the Pakistan Study Centre, University of Karachi.
Academic Journey
Dr. Ahmed completed his M.A. in Political Science from the University of Karachi, securing a first-class first position. He subsequently earned an M.Phil in Pakistan Studies from the same university in 1987.
His academic achievements led to the award of a Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship, enabling him to pursue doctoral studies in the United Kingdom. In 1993, he obtained his Ph.D. in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge.
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Ahmed returned to Pakistan and continued his academic career at the University of Karachi, where he served in a number of capacities, including Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. He has also maintained long-standing associations with several universities and educational institutions as visiting faculty.
Teaching and Research
Dr. Ahmed's areas of teaching and research include Government and Politics in Pakistan, the History of the Freedom Movement, Research Methodology, Constitutional Development, Federalism, Political History and Contemporary Socio-political Issues of Pakistan.
His scholarly interests have particularly focused on Pakistan's political evolution, constitutional history and the relationship between state, society and political institutions. His research examines historical developments while also addressing contemporary challenges confronting Pakistan.
Among his notable authored works is Federalism in Pakistan: A Constitutional Study. He has also authored Pakistan: Historical Legacies, Contemporary Issues, in addition to other scholarly publications. His academic contributions extend beyond his own books: he has edited and compiled numerous works on history, politics and literature, while his research articles have appeared in national and international journals, edited volumes and research publications.

Dr. Ahmed has participated in and presented papers at numerous national and international conferences, seminars and academic forums. His scholarly and professional engagements have taken him to several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Austria, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Malaysia and Ethiopia.
He has also delivered lectures and conducted seminars during an international sea voyage from Singapore to Sri Lanka aboard the Peace Boat, reflecting his wider engagement with international discussions on peace, society and human rights.
