Syed Azfar Rizvi

I was born in Dhaka on 27 December 1957. I got my basic education from Azeempur English Medium School in Dhaka. I did my matriculation in first division from New Government School, the only Urdu Medium School of Dhaka from where lots of prominent personalities have studied. Then I got admission in Dhaka College but due to the severance of East Pakistan I couldn’t continue my studies there and migrated to Karachi through ICRC (International Committee of Red Cross).

I am thankful to Prof. Hasnain Kazmi and Prof. Imtiaz Hussain for helping me in acquiring education here. I then did my intermediate science in second division from Karachi. It was a very hard time and earn a living was too difficult alongside getting education. So in 1974 I started imparting door-to-door tuitions to resolve my financial problems. We were 6 brothers and 4 sisters with parents. They all were dependent on me. Besides bearing my education expenses I also had to look after all of them. In 1976 I got admission in Geology Dept. in University but later ended up doing Chemistry. From 1974 to 1982 I struggled aggressively and during the same period I got two of my sisters married and kept looking after my family as well as my education. Later we started offering group tuitions to the students.

Mr. Jamiluddin Aali was in National Bank of Pakistan at that time and helped us get the money granted for students of East Pakistan as “Qarz-e-Hasna”. Those few thousand rupees turned out to be a treasure for me. Dr. Peerzada Qasim was the kind man who awarded me with scholarship for the whole period in Karachi University. I can never forget the favors by these respected personalities and will always be grateful.

The group tuition endeavor ended up as a school. When we started the school there were only 2 students but let me tell you that after 25 years more than 55 thousands students have studied from our chain of schools. We had started with the name Dhaka Coaching Centre and now it has become Dhaka Group of Educational Institutions. We have O level and Matriculation system schools, coaching centers & intermediate colleges, which we are going to make degree-awarding institute next year. The current annual turnover of our group is 5 thousands students per year now Alhamdulillah.

When I had arrived in Karachi after migration I had only 10 rupees in my pocket but by the Grace of Allah now the total amount I offer as scholarships to students is more than 15 lac per year

I am happily married and have 6 kids. My wife Mrs. Syeda Hasina Rizvi also helped a lot in my activities, a working lady who is presently the Co-Chairperson of Dhaka Group of Educational Institutes. When we got married my wife was just matriculate but after marriage she did intermediate, graduation and masters, all as a regular student. At this stage I must submit my feelings and sentiments, which I have gathered during my marital association with her. In Fact she has left a deep impression of her amazing character upon glory and success. I thank her for the support she extended to me when I needed it most. I can rightly say that she is a lady of iron will. She never gave in to the odds. Her unflinching support and wisdom always guided me to resolve my problems of life. She has a loving heart and generous bent of mind. I pray for her health and long life.

Later, I got a chance to obtain diploma in education from UK and plenty of other diplomas, workshops and seminars came along.

Anjuman Tarraqi-e-Urdu offered me life membership and last year I was also made the member of syndicate of Federal Urdu University. We have also made an Art association by the name of Daira-e-Adab u Saqafat International. For the last 5 years, this association has made its name in the society under which we arrange different gatherings and seminars every month for the promotion of Urdu Adab. On social front, I have been an active member of life club international of which I was the District Cabinet Secretary last year.

Hanif Mohammed

Hanif Mohammed (born 21 December 1934 in Junagadh, Gujarat, India) was one of Pakistan’s greatest cricketers, playing for the Pakistani cricket team in 55 Test matches between 1952/53 and 1969/70 and averaging a fine 43.98, with twelve hundreds.

The highest of those centuries, 337 against West Indies in 1957/58, was the longest innings in Test history (and stood as the the longest in all first-class cricket for over 40 years) as Hanif spent more than 16 hours at the crease to save his team from a hopeless position after they had followed on 473 runs behind.

In 1958/59, he produced another astonishing batting display by breaking Don Bradman’s record for the highest individual first-class innings. Hanif made 499 before being run out attempting his five hundredth run; this mark stood for more than 35 years before being eclipsed by Brian Lara in 1994. Plenty more runs were still to come, and in all he made 55 first-class centuries and finished with an outstanding first-class career average of 52.32. He could bowl with either arm, and even kept wicket on a number of occasions.

Hanif’s long career lasted until 1975/76 and took him all over the world, but he never played in the English County Championship, although he did have a single outing for the Northamptonshire Second XI in August 1965 whilst preparing for his appearance for a Rest of the World XI against England at the Scarborough Festival a few days later. Hanif was in fact working in England in 1994, and hearing of the possibility of his record being broken rushed to Edgbaston, unfortunately too late to witness any of Lara’s innings.

Hanif was named as a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1968.

Many of Hanif’s relations were also fine cricketers: his brothers Mushtaq, Sadiq and Wazir all played Tests for Pakistan, as did his son Shoaib, another brother Raees was once twelfth man for Pakistan, and four nephews had first-class careers. His mother Ameer Bee was a national badminton champion in pre-independence India and is considered responsible for inspiring her sons to take up sports.

Right from my childhood I was very much interested in literature and arts. When I was in class 7, I had memorized Iqbal’s poetry. Poetry was my major area. Then, with the passage of time our financial position improved. Then I diversified a bit and formed a small production house of my own. I have an event management company as well and I brought all the singers from India and UK like Sukhbeer, Stereo Nation etc. I have also produced some drama serials like ‘Jaaeye Kahan Ye Dil’, which was also written by me. I did all this more for the sake of my personal interest.

I have 4 children; 2 boys and 2 girls. The eldest daughter wants to become a journalist and she has done A-level. My son is 17 and he is doing A’ level, he wants to be a lawyer. The younger daughter is in Grade-7 and the youngest son is in Grade-6. I have not placed any restrictions on them about their choices except the cultural and social limitations. Fortunately, in my shape they have a person who can become a link between them and the opportunities outside. My responsibility is to provide all the facilities to my children for their studies.

I joined Arts Council about 8, 9 years back. As secretary of Arts Council this is my first year. My objective is to work sincerely for the promotion and survival of art in the country. I believe that most of us don’t want to settle abroad, so we have to make efforts in order to create a better society for our children. (Kalpoint)

Hasina Moin

Dramatist-born 1942 at Kanpur-India, Hasina Moin took her initial education at Rawalpindi, Lahore and finally Karachi where she did MA (History) from the University of Karachi. Her yearn for writing was visible right from the time she was in final years of her schooling...as from the days of her Class VII school activities---she got selected to write weekly column by the title of BHAI JAN for a local journal.

Her fame started laying its foundation when she regularly wrote some memorable plays for Radio Pakistan Karachi's all time popular "Studio Number NAU" (which, incidently, produced artiste' like Talat Hussain, Sajida Syed, Santosh Russell, Mughal Bashar, Mehmood Ali, Qazi Wajid, Talat Siddiqui, Rehana Siddiqui, Neelofer Aleem, Mahmood Khan Moodi, Jamshed Ansari...the list goes on....). Professionally...Hasina took up the educational pursuits and did teaching..and rose to the level of Principal.

It was in 1969 that Iftikhar Arif, Head-Script at PTV-Karachi Centre...called Hasina and offered her to write a play for the then, forthcoming EID. Initially Hasina was shocked and fell off the lid...but took courage to pen down a play...the cast of which was also decided by her with Kunwar Aftab Ahmed as the Director....hence came "EID KA JORRA" with Neelofer Aleem and Shakil in lead supported by Khalid Nizami and Ishrat Hashmi and thereafter it was no looking back for Hasina...as the Eid Al Azha saw "Happy Eid Mubarak" and then came the deluge----with serials and plays like; SHEHZORI, ZEIR ZABR PEISH, UNCLE URFI, UNKAHI, TANHAIYAAN, PARCHAIEYEN, BANDISH, DHUND, DHOOP KINAREY, AAHAT, NADAN NADIA, KASAK, PAL DO PAL, TERE AJANE SE...while her play "GURYA" directed by Shirin Khan with cast; Manzoor Qureshi, Shahla Ahmad (Bina of Uncle Urfi), Azra Sherwani and Raju Jamil, won an award at the Global TV Plays festival at Tokyo..on best script and direction.....where Shirin traveled and participated on behalf of PTV-Karachi...in 1975.

Hasina is recipient of President of Pakistan's PRIDE OF PERFORMANCE award---though she deserved SITARA E IMTIAZ.

Hasina Moin continues to pursue her talent--regardlessly---under the current commercial scenario which has gripped the Showbiz media on TV plays and serials where the farcical "writers" are making "hay" while the sun (of commercialism) shines! and Hasina..trying hard to be original instead of doing some cosmetics on the old and even new English, American and Indian movies--for transforming them into serials for PAK-SHOWBIZ on the tube!

Zeba Bakhtiar

Zeba Bakhtiar, who is the daughter of the former attorney general of Pakistan, Yahya Bakhtiar, hails from Baluchistan , Pakistan. Her mother is of foreign descent. Like Zeba Bakhtiar, her brother also associated himself with Pakistani television. Equipped with higher educational grades, distinct family background and human values, Zeba Bakhtiar was attracted to show business as a teenager. The tremendous talent of Zeba Bakhtiar was there, just waiting to be used.

Zeba Bakhtiar debuted from the Karachi television’s play ‘Anarkali’, opposite Mehmood Akhtar. In it, she played the title role of ‘Anarkali’. The drama stirs the heart with its story of a girl in a man’s world. Those were moments for wistful looks and glistening eyes.

Back in the late 1980s, Zeba Bakhtiar was a young Pakistani actress of glistening freshness and uncanny intuition. Any one, whose heart does not embrace this gorgeous, gracious, glamorous girl of the yester year, probably does not have one. Moreover, she often found, of all things, innovation and honor in the television programs. Soon she became the perennial favorite of Pakistani youth. Zeba Bakhtiar’s debut film ‘Hina’ was made and produced by R.K. films in India. She played the lead opposite Rishi Kapoor. Director, Randhir Kapoor, writer, Haseena Moin.

The moral authority she brought to the role in ‘Hina’, without sacrificing a youthful spontaneity, was astounding. Its characters make surprising connections when it comes to team- work.

Zeba Bakhtiar’s first marriage, which took place before the movie shoot of ‘Hina’ ended in divorce. She often finds, among other things, prestige and challenge in the movie business. During those days, there were rumors circulating in the press of Zeba Bakhtiar’s marriage to Indian actor, Javed Jafri. However, Zeba Bakhtiar vehemently denied those allegations as a conspiracy against her. In her movies and television plays, Zeba Bakhtiar displayed one of the defining sensibilities of the 1990s and beyond. She has captured the imagination of admiring fans since she was a girl.

The rosy radiance that follows a pleasant encounter with Zeba Bakhtiar is laudable. She reached the pinnacle of a remarkable career by following her own instincts. In times due course, Zeba Bakhtiar moved to Pakistan and married actor- singer- composer, Adnan Sami, son of Aijaz Sami. Ah, the web of love. How these forces feed the flame of life. She had a son, Azan, from Adnan Sami.

Those were great moments at work, when Zeba Bakhtiar played the lead opposite Adnan Sami in her first Pakistani film ‘Sargam’. Theatrical release was on September 1, 1995. Director, Syed Noor, producer- composer, Adnan Sami.

Additionally, Zeba Bakhtiar’s caricature of lead actress in ‘Sargam’ has won the Nigar Award in her debut Pakistani movie. She seems destined to add more laurels to her celluloid persona. Indeed, she gives a brilliantly restrained performance in ‘Sargam’. Zeba Bakhtiar’s marriage to Adnan Sami could not stood the test of time, and it resulted in their separation. That occurred after the theatrical release of ‘Sargam’, and Adnan Sami went abroad with his son, Azan.

After a long child custody battle, Zeba Bakhtiar succeeded in getting her son back. Those days Zeba Bakhtiar fielded inquiries about her relationship with Adnan and Azan, and in doing so proved that her heart was loyal. Zeba Bakhtiar’s greatness shines through in director Sangeeta’s successful film ‘Qaid’ in which she played the lead lady opposite actor Saud. Alternating between television and films, she frequently was cast in major television roles.

She was most memorably cast in writer Rauf Khalid’s drama serial ‘Laag’, which was telecast from Pakistani television. An artist of unusual prowess and grace, Zeba Bakhtiar turned in one of her best performances as leader of Kashmiri independence movement, ‘Dukhtaran-e-Kashmir’ in ‘Laag.’

The drama serial ‘Laag’ made the public realize the deep resonance of her work. A part of her charm derives from the apparent fact that she is working and having fun at the same time.

Zeba Bakhtiar is, indeed, a loveable woman whose hatred of hypocrisy is legendary. She worked in the heartfelt and handsomely made movie, ‘Chief Sahib’ in 1996. In dramatic roles, the movie cast moves effortlessly from one scene to another. Producer- director, Javed Sheikh, stars included Zeba Bakhtiar, Javed Sheikh and Neeli.

Zeba Bakhtiar shone in her directional debut movie ‘Babu’ in 2001. Its story revolves around love, lust, and the well- known adage ‘give respect get respect’ starring Zeba Bakhtiar, dubbed as ‘Ghazal’, Saud Amin, Lehri, Peer Moazzam.

She brings a new level of intensity to her acting in the Pakistan television drama serial ‘Pehli see mohabbat’. Writer, Rafaqat Hayat, director, Najam-Uz- Zaman, executive producer, Ghazanfar Ali. ‘Pehli see mohabbat’ is the Urdu version of the English novel ‘Beware of pity.’ Cast included Zeba Bakhtiar, dubbed as ‘Sofia’ Shahood Alvi, and Shakeel. It is a story of a pretty handicapped girl.

Zeba Bakhtiar’s keenly articulate movie grammar and a tender grasp of human nature have maintained uniformity all through these times. Further, her artistry is worth applauding in television drama ‘Sangam’ Cast includes Zeba Bakhtiar as ‘Farah’, Talat Husain, Qazi Wajid. Written by Zahida Hina, director, Nasir Danawala. Best known for her splendid direction capability, Zeba Bakhtiar attained major celebrity as an artist also in drama ‘Kundi’. Cast included Zeba Bakhtiar, Firdous Jamal.
She is the source of quite a few exemplary television plays. That said Zeba Bakhtiar’s resplendent career moved on fulfilling her initial promise of consistent hard work. A quick example is the television drama ‘Kisay apna kahoon’ cast included Zeba Bakhtiar, Noman Aijaz and Talat Husain. Additionally, she emerged as a convincing artist in the television drama ‘Gunah gaar’. Cast included Zeba Bakhtiar, Izhar Qazi and Tahira Wasti.

Overwhelmed by her artistic prowess, the audience always gives her an enthusiastic response, which Zeba Bakhtiar well deserves. In spite of her enormous talents as director, Zeba Bakhtiar still possesses a face made for acting.

Amir Adnan

Despite it being a textile hub, fashion, style and glamour are not labels commonly associated with the industrial Punjab city of Faisalabad. Amir Adnan took up the challenge to introduce all these aspects of modern high street style to the textile capital of Pakistan. In doing so, Amir Adnan along with his team of organizers took Faisalabad by storm. Advertising was prominent in all the major newspapers and there were hoardings all over the city. The fashion show was Aamir Adnan and Huma Aamir Adnan's first trip to the city where they presented their exquisite collection of casuals, semi-formals and formal wear for both men and women.
Aamir Adnan yet is looking beyond the usual horizons and planning to open an outlet in every possible prospective market of fashion. Aamir Adnan organised a fashion show in Pakistan with special help from old friends and colleagues like Khawar Riaz (KR CREW) and Ather Hafiz, the men's wear designer at Libas. Khawar Riaz provided the models and was in charge of their grooming and make-up.
The collection that was presented on the stage carried a wide range of designs and latest styles of formal shalwar kameez and semi-formal salwar kameez for both genders. The men's collection portrayed simple colours like black, blues, greens and browns with the elegance of embroidery on kurta and sherwanis that is associated with all Amir Adnan products. The eastern wedding wear was the most well received. The second segment of groomswear capsuled the glory and majesty of our traditions. The sherwanees were elegantly embroidered using semi-precious stones and delicate hand embroidery that made every model look like a member of the royal courtyard of the Maharajas and Emperors. Pure silk Jamewar turbans provided the picture perfect glory of the past represented as today's fashion statement.
